We're excited to have Chaklam Ng as our next guest speaker at our upcoming Professional Development Workshop. Chaklam is a Hong Kong-based sound artist and inventor of musical instruments with over a decade of experience designing sound instruments that explore the intersection of sound, engineering, and interactive design.

In two sessions, Chaklam will guide us through the making of the newly designed synthesizer instrument of four sawtooth wave oscillators, Quad. Participants of the workshop will be able to take the Quad home and continue their journey of making new sounds with it. On Sunday afternoon, Chaklam will sit down with us and share his insights into how errors and instruments work hand in hand to create music, and his approach to instrument designing from the creator’s perspective.

在兩節課堂中，澤霖將會帶領我們製作以四個鋸齒波振盪器、新設計的合成器樂器Quad。參加者可帶Quad回家，繼續探索他們的音效製作。在星期日下午，澤霖將分享有關誤差和樂器如何攜手創造音樂的見解，以及從創作者的角度分享設計樂器的方法。

Workshop

Quad challenges and explores the concept of sonic harmony in dissonance. Designed by Chaklam Ng, this simple synthesizer instrument consists of four sawtooth wave oscillators, ranging from low to high frequency. Tweaking the faders creates an organic pulsing grind between the four oscillators, resulting in beautiful and sometimes unexpected harmonies. Quad is a delightfully playful instrument that unlocks the potential for serendipitous sonic discoveries.

Materials: Aluminium, Faders and Knob, Acrylic, Circuit board, Electronic components

The workshop fee has included all of the materials and tools. Finished product can be taken home at the end of the event.

Artist sharing - Resonance and Resistance: The Friction Between Music and the Instrument

The idea that musical instruments are just tools is false. The quirks and errors that they produce are essential feedback for creating interesting music. In this sharing, musical instrument inventor Chaklam Ng shares insights into how errors and instruments work hand in hand to create music. He will discuss how unexpected errors can be harnessed, from everyday objects to prestigious instruments. Chaklam will also provide demonstrations of this idea by sharing some of his previous works.

Chaklam Ng

Chaklam Ng is a Hong Kong-based sound artist and inventor of musical instruments. He holds a degree in Communication Design from Swinburne University of Technology and is the founder of Oblik Soundwork. For more than a decade, he has been designing sound instruments that explore the intersection of sound, engineering, and interactive design. Chaklam has discovered that the most original music and sounds arise when the tool in hand presents a challenge to the player.This is the moment when confrontation transforms into organic harmony. He believes that before creating new music, it is necessary to create a new sound instrument.

His recent work, "Pause Rec Play 2.0,” is an interactive sound installation that premiered at Clockenflap 2023. The installation explores the concept of a mahjong game, where players are dealt sound samples housed inside 24 loop tapes to create a unique sound collage. Chaklam's works are often created with the community in mind, and his public installations have been featured at major venues such as K11 Musea and PMQ.

吳澤霖是一位香港聲音藝術家和樂器發明家。他於斯威本理工大學取得傳播設計學位，並創辦Oblik Soundwork。十多年來，他一直設計及探索聲音、工程和互動設計交集的聲音樂器。澤霖發現，當演奏者面對手中樂器的挑戰時，最原創的音樂和聲音就會產生。這是對抗轉化為和諧的時刻。他認為在創作新音樂之前，必要先創造一種新的聲音樂器。

他最近的作品《Pause Rec Play 2.0》是一個互動式聲音裝置，於2023年的Clockenflap首次亮相。此裝置探索了麻將遊戲的概念，玩家將得到24個循環錄音帶中的聲音樣本，創建獨特的聲音拼貼。
