Summer Intensive Course

Push the ENVELOPE Sound Art Summer Intensive Program is designed by a team of professional artist teachers to providehands-on and collaborative experiences on various approaches to sound-making and listening from a cross-disciplinary perspective. From the Preparation Course to the 7-day Summer Intensive Program, the activities are guided by experienced artists to integrate a wide-range of knowledge including science, art, and technology in the process of sound-making leading towards a public group showcase. The program welcomes young students and artists, with or without prior music training, who are curious, eager, and ready to explore the sound world
beyond them.

推信封聲音藝術推廣計畫 — 夏令營是由一群專業的藝術家導師設計，提供各種跨界的聲音製作和聆聽方法的實踐和合作體驗。從營前預備班到為期七天的夏令營，活動將由多位經驗豐富的藝術家指導，將科學、藝術和科技各方面的知識，融入聲音製作之中，並引導參與者於公開展演中展示學習成果。是次計畫，不論曾否接受音樂訓練，只要對聲音世界充滿好奇心、熱情和勇於探索的學生和年輕藝術家都歡迎參加。

PTE Lab #1 - Soundthing Uncertain

This will be a place to exchange ideas, develop concepts and conduct experiments. We ask you to bring “something” to play, discuss, and experiment with. The “something” could be intangible (concepts, ideas) or tangible (existing instrument, object). Guided by Adam Neutron and Cheuk Wing Nam, you will either realize a proposed concept and idea of a sound object, or customize and rework an existing instrument or object in workshop format together as a group. After Adam and Wing Nam’s introduction to approaching DIY electronics, they will then provide individual advising on specific topics such as programing, coding, hacking, and physical modifications in focus group sessions. At the end of the course, you will get to demonstrate your ideas and instruments in a public showcase.

The course emphasizes on the kinetic application on sonic objects and the exploration of physical interaction between performer and the sound objects. You will explore the practical and creative approach in creating and manipulating a sound object as a performance tool with the integration of coding, electronics, sensors and wired/wireless connections. Furthermore, extending the physical interaction through the incorporation of kinetic application, and exploring the impact of people and space in interactivities. To begin, you will bring along an object to explore its physicality and the extending possibility. Followed by a series of focus group classes providing consultation on both artistic and technical aspects. At the end of the course, you will get to demonstrate your ideas and perform with your creations in a public showcase.

The showcases are the collective sound experimentation sessions for the participants of Push the ENVELOPE Sound Art Initiative 2024. In addition to the summer camp, which has returned with great success from last year, this program also features the two Soundthing Labs, #1 Soundthing Uncertain and #2 Moving Soundthing. The three showcases aim to allow the participants to demonstrate and present their process of developing creative concepts using sound as a medium throughout the summer.

Soundthing Uncertain, led by Adam Neutron and Cheuk Wing Nam, is mainly conducted in form of group workshops. Some participants begin from scratch, and some modify existing objects to develop a new instrument or sound object with the use of techniques such as programming, hacking, DIY electronics, woodworking, and metalworking.

Moving Soundthing, led by Fiona Lee and Kenny Wong, explores the application of kinetics on sound objects and the physical interaction between performers and sound objects. The participants are introduced to the use of electronic sensors, transducers, and connect various components using computer programming to create interactive devices that explore the interactivity between people, objects, and space.

The second edition of the summer camp is jointly curated by Contemporary Musiking Hong Kong and two Artist Teachers, Kin Lam and Lawrence Lau, to provide hands-on and collaborative experiences on various approaches to sound-making and listening from a cross-disciplinary perspective. After a two-day preparation course and a seven-day summer intensive program, participants were engaged in discussions on “What Can be Sound Art?”, workshops on DIY Electronics, Max Programming, Ableton Live, jam sessions with various kind of electronic instruments, as well as guest workshops by AK Kan, Larry Shuen, and Steve Hui (NERVE). The participants range from secondary school to university level students as well as working artists, with or without prior music and art training, who are curious, eager, and ready to explore the sound world beyond them.

這次公開展演是一個今年推信封聲音藝術推廣計畫各活動參與者的集體聲音試驗場地。當中活動除了載譽回歸的夏令營，亦包括兩個歷時兩個月的推信封實驗室 -《不明聲物》和《移聲換形》。此展演旨在讓參與者們向公眾示範及展示他們使用聲音作媒介發展創作概念的過程。

由Adam Neutron 及卓穎嵐主導的《不明聲物》，主要以小組工作坊的形式進行，學員們或由零開始或由現成物改造以編程、駭入、自製電路、木工、金工和改造等技術發展出全新的自製樂器或聲音裝置。

《移聲換形》則由李穎姍和黃智銓主導，課程中探索在聲音物件上應用動力學以及探索演奏者及聲音物件之間的物理互動。學員們透過學習利用傳感器、換能器，並以電腦編程連接各零件製作出擴展人、物、空間的互動裝置。

本計畫之夏令營由現在音樂及兩位藝術家導師林建霖及劉曉江共同策畫。從跨界別的角度，為參與者提供多種方法，親身或與別人合作體驗聲音創作及聆聽聲音。經過兩天的營前預備班及七日六夜的夏令營，參與者們除學習嘗試多種電子樂器、DIY電子自製樂器、Max 編程以及使用Ableton Live剪輯聲音和演出、亦經歷過孫禮賢、簡僖進及許敖山 (腦科)的客席講座，並投入到「甚麼可以是聲音藝術」的討論之中。夏令營的參與者由中學生到大學生，以至現職藝術家都有，不論有或沒有受過音樂及藝術訓練，他們都以好奇、熱情及開放的心態探索超越他們的聲音世界。
