Contemporary Musiking Hong Kong (CMHK) invites proposals from Hong Kong–based artists for a new international residency exchange with Perte de Signal, an artist‑run centre for digital and media arts in Montreal, Canada. This residency extends CMHK's ongoing exchange initiatives (previously hosted by iii in The Hague) to a new context that foregrounds experimental practices at the intersection of sound, image, performance, and technology.
About Perte de Signal (Montreal)
Perte de Signal is a Montreal‑based artist‑run centre dedicated to digital and media arts. Its mission is to support creative research and experimentation, promote artists' work nationally and internationally, and develop critical thought around digital cultures through exhibitions, residencies, and the rustines_lab, its lab‑gallery for hands‑on experimentation and public encounters. The centre is a hub for collaborative projects that connect diverse communities and foster new technological literacies in the arts.
Residency focus
We are seeking proposals that explore sound in relation to digital media, image, and performance. Projects may involve, but are not limited to:
- Cross-discipline practices focusing in sound, also engaging with digital, audiovisual, or interactive media
- Experimental music that expands into spatial sound, video, or installation
- Research‑driven practices involving custom instruments, interfaces, or software
- Cross‑disciplinary works that connect sonic experimentation with critical perspectives on technology, networks, or digital culture
The residency is conceived as a period of artistic research and experimentation, rather than a production‑only grant. Proposals should demonstrate a clear line of inquiry and an interest in sharing process with local communities in Montreal, in dialogue with Perte de Signal's public and research‑oriented programmes.
As part of the residency, the artist will have the opportunity to take part in the workshop Introduction to Modular Video Synthesis workshop organised by Perte de Signal (June 13th and 20th). This training offers an immersion into contemporary practices of modular video synthesis through a combined theoretical, historical, and hands-on approach. Participants will explore the tools, languages, and aesthetics specific to this medium while developing an active studio-based practice. The residency artist is also encouraged to participate in the public performance event (June 27th), as part of the centre’s programming and community engagement activities.
Residency framework
- Host organisation: Perte de Signal, Montreal, Canada
- Proposed residency period: mid-June for 2 weeks (i.e. June 11 – 28th)
- CMHK support: Travel subsidy and production support (HKD 30,000), pre‑departure briefing and follow‑up sharing platform in Hong Kong
- Perte de Signal support: Studio/lab access, technical and curatorial support, local networking opportunities, and public presentation/mediation framework according to project needs
The selected artist will be expected to:
- Develop their proposed research or project during the residency
- Engage in at least one public activity in Montreal (e.g. talk, workshop, presentation, or showing) in conversation with Perte de Signal
- Present a sharing (performance, talk, installation, or documentation‑based presentation) in Hong Kong organised by CMHK following the residency
Selection criteria
- Artistic relevance and originality of the proposal
- Clear relationship to sound art / experimental music and its extension into digital or media arts
- Alignment with Perte de Signal's mission of creative research, experimentation, and critical engagement with digital cultures
- Feasibility within the residency period and available resources
- Potential for long‑term impact on the artist's practice and on dialogues between Hong Kong and Montreal artistic communities
A jury composed of representatives from CMHK and Perte de Signal will review all applications.
Application materials
Applicants must submit their application on or before April 27 2026 23:59 Hong Kong Time.
Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.
