Illuminated Echoes《光照回聲》

Which type of experience would arise if we treat images as independent entities and generate sound from them? Illuminated Echoes explores this same concept by using multiple cathode ray tube (CRT) televisions to display images, combining them
with solar panels and transforming image-derived light into sound. Sound and image thus remain synchronised, but sound textures are entirely different. Undulating waves become a fluctuating rustling sound; a speeding car emits a short, powerful hum; the sound of workers hustling at a construction site becomes an on-and-off beat. In the signal-conversion process, these ordinary images give rise to an indescribable soundscape always hidden within the images and remaining unnoticed until now.

若將畫面視為獨立的存在,並以此生成聲音,會帶來怎樣的體驗?作品以此為概念,運用多台映像管電視(CRT TV)呈現影像,並結合太陽能板,將影像的光轉換為聲音。在這裡,聲畫依然同步,但所呈現的質感卻截然不同。起伏不定的海浪,轉化為載浮載沉的沙沙聲;前方急速飛馳的車,駛出短促且有力的低吟;工人在工地上埋頭苦幹的身影,卻變成有一搭沒一搭的拍子。尋常影像在訊號轉換的過程中,衍變出無以言喩的聲景——它們原本就隱匿於影像之中,只是未曾被察覺。

Reciter(s) 2.0 is a distributed sound performance composed of mobile devices, voice assistants, and AI-derived texts. Audiences simply open a webpage on their mobile device to join a recitation shaped by diverse accents and rhythms, transforming the internet's connectivity, synchronization capabilities, and transmission errors into an
audible experience.
The work draws inspiration from Cisco's widely recognized 2000 commercial, "Empowering the Internet Generation," in which children of various ethnicities repeatedly asked, "Are you ready?", conveying an optimistic vision of global connectivity
and digital empowerment. Today, voice assistants appear to fulfill that borderless promise—but the synthetic voices that once felt novel have become habitual media: embedded, standardized, and teetering on the edge of obsolescence.
As more devices join the recitation, differences in hardware and network quality introduce unpredictable shifts in rhythm and audio alignment. The work brings texts, data, and behavioral traces from cyberspace into physical space through distributed
recitation, revealing gaps between technological rationality and sensory experience.

《朗誦者 2.0》是一場由行動裝置、語音助理、AI 衍生文本共同構成的分散式聲響表演。觀眾僅需透過行動裝置開啟網頁,即可加入這場由不同口音與節奏形塑的朗誦練習,將網路世界的連通性、同步能力及傳輸誤差轉化為可感知的聲音。
本作品的靈感源於 2000 年思科(Cisco)公司廣為人知的商業廣告「賦權互聯網世代」。當時,廣告中不同族裔的孩童不斷詢問:「你準備好了嗎」,傳遞出對高度互聯與全球化的美好願景。時至今日,語音助理應用表面上實現了跨國界的承諾,但這些合成聲音也逐漸從新奇走向日常,成為一種「慣習媒介」,並徘徊在過時的邊緣。
隨著越來越多裝置陸續加入朗誦,展演的同步性將受裝置性能與網路品質的影響,進而產生難以預測的節奏偏移與音訊錯位。作品將虛擬世界的文字、數據與行為軌跡,在實體空間中以交替誦讀具體化,凸顯技術理性與感知經驗間的縫隙。

This is a combined event of a performance by Wing Lam Fung’s Illuminated Echoes, and a guided tour of Po-hao Chi’s Reciter(s) 2.0 by the participating artists and CMHK. Fung activates the installation through the performance, playing with the CRT TVs as if they are instruments, by generating and manipulating graphics to reveal the unnoticed soundscape. Po-hao Chi’s installation features a group of voice assistants in various accents, speaking AI generated texts based on a TV ad from the 2000s portraying a promising future of global connectivity through the internet. The guided tour will be led by one of the CMHK team members.

本活動包括了馮穎琳 《光照回聲》的現場表演,以及由參與藝術家與 CMHK 共同導賞《朗誦者2.0》。馮穎琳透過表演啟動展覽裝置,如同演奏樂器般操作 CRT 電視,生成並操控圖像,從而揭示被忽略的聲景。紀柏豪的裝置由一組帶有不同口音的語音助理組成,朗讀由人工智能生成的文本;這些文本取材自 2000 年代一則描繪透過網絡實現全球互聯美好未來的電視廣告。導賞將由 CMHK 團隊成員帶領。
